Anne of green gables: análise imagético-textual entre livro e novela gráfica pela tradução intersemiótica.

Abstract

Considering Graphic Novels as semiotic text, needing more research in the field of Translation Studies and Adaptation, and seeking to contribute to the study of Adaptation of literary novels, the aim of this research is to analyze the Graphic Novel of the book Anne of Green Gables. In order to observe which physical and psychological elements stand out in the adaptation of the character Anne. As theoretical framework, the study is based on Intersemiotic Translation, considering Jakobson (1959[2000]), Peirce (2005) e Plaza (2003). In the Theory of Adaptation field, the study considers the contributions of Hutcheon (2011) Sanders (2006) and SnellHornby (2006). Then, we reflected on the Sequential Art and images with contributions based on Eisner (2010), Kukkonen (2013) and Dondis (2015). In methodological terms, this research is descriptive, interpretative and qualitative. In the area of Translation Studies, this research is in the Textual Analysis and Translation category, because it involves the comparative analysis of linguistic elements of the source text Anne of Green Gables to the linguistic and visual elements of the Graphic Novel. A textual analysis is performed using the concept of text as both verbal and non-verbal texts (WILLIAMS; CHESTERMAN, 2002). After a pre-analysis of the corpus, it was categorized, taking into account the most recurring physical and psychological elements in the construction of the character, namely: i) the physical composition and expressiveness of the character Anne and ii) the psychological profile of the character Anne. The results show that Anne’s physical characteristics dialogue with her talkative and creative personality, her expressiveness is used to convey her character’s emotions to the reader through illustration, while her hair color is used to emphasize her explosive temperament. The concern with the position of women in society that characterize Anne as a feminist, in turn, is not translated into the graphic novel. The adapters choice softens the impact that the construction of a main character, feminine and feminist could have on the consumer public of the graphic novel, as this feature emphasizes the character’s strong and unique personality.
