Abstract

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) is a legume rich in proteins and iron, and has essential amino acids. During its production may arise some obstacles like weeds. The objective of this work was to determine the competitive aspects among weeds, Terai (Cyperus rotundus L.) and breeding (Amaranthus spinosus L.) and cowpea. The work was conducted from January to March 2017, at the Center of Science and Technology Agroalimentaria (CCTA) of the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), Campus Pombal-PB. The cultivar used was BRS Novaera. Seeding was carried out in January 2017 in pots. The experimental design was a completely randomized block design in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme, and the factors were four breeding populations of Amaranthus spinosus L. x 4 populations of cyperus rotundus L. with four replications totaling 64 experimental units. The evaluated characteristics were: Plant height; Number of leaves per plant; Stem diameter; Dry shoot mass and dry root mass. The data were submitted to analysis of variance by the F test and the regression analysis. The presence of bredo and tiririca in the plots impaired the growth and development of cowpea. The effects of interference were more significant up to 30 days after sowing. The competition of the cowpea and the bredo was more damaging than with the tripe.
