Imagens contraditórias do padre Ibiapina: devoção e imaginário religioso (1860-1897).

Abstract

The various studies on Father Ibiapina have always focused on the same sources and always approaching the same points. However, from the use of nineteenth-century newspapers, we can observe a new view on the missions, the works and their relationship with the countryman. At various times, Ibiapina appears alongside the farmers, integrating a whole structure in its surroundings to keep the countryman subordinate there. About the Houses of Charity, which in many works are romanticized, we can see, through these sources, that they were spaces of intrigue and accumulation of patrimony. The construction of the imaginary around the figure of Father Ibiapina, in his post-mortem, will contribute to yet another element of popular religiosity, with his practices that will be imitated by other contemporary missionaries.
