Abstract

Environmental education has become a transformative source, willing to react to the constant changes and environmental impacts that occur in the world. The advance of degradation caused by human activities constitutes itself by a constant threat to biodiversity and is associated with the level of conception and perception of society with regard to environmental issues. Thus, this research aims to analyze the perception about the terms: environment and environmental education, as well as the knowledge about the practices of the students of the State School of Elementary and Secondary Education Iolanda Tereza Chaves Lima, located in the municipality of Cubati-PB. Based on the survey of the conceptions about the environment and environmental education of the groups studied, it was possible to identify the level of knowledge and an awareness of the students in relation to the themes of the environmental area. We also identified possible tools for working environmental themes in the classroom. The methodology used to realize the research was data collection with a questionnaire applied to the students. The results obtained with the research helped to conclude about the importance of a work with the environmental thematic in the classroom, focused on the socio-environmental formation of the students, in the sense of arousing the habitual care with the environment and promote knowledge directed to concrete actions within and beyond the school environment. The research also had the purpose of provoking, although initially, environmental changes in the thought and attitudes of a significant part of the population. Besides stimulating the student to preserve the environment and promote the integration between the school and the community, aiming principles of environmental protection in harmony with sustainable development.
