Abstract

The place in which we live tells much about every one of us. The recollections we carry allow us to make a bridge between past and present and, at the same time, we are able to observe the modifying agents of that place. Galante district is inserted in an important historical context, serving for many years as a support point for many people working with cotton transportation from Campina Grande to Recife and vice versa. The freight train was, in the past, which made possible the appearing of the settlement of Galante, and nowadays has gained new contents due to the transformations occurred. Thereby, the present work aimed to analyze the spatial transformations suffered by Galante, having as main study object the influence of the freight train and its new current version as the forró train. Temporal aspects must be considered, for this reason, we analyzed the spatial transformations through the analysis categories proposed by Milton Santos (1985): shape, function, structure and process. The research was developed from a bibliographic survey to support the theoretical reflection. For the empirical comprehension of Galante’s spatial transformation we took as basis texts and images of the past and present time. This way it was possible to empiricize the theoretical debate made by Santos from Galante’s reality. Thus, the train/rail/station in Galante, as shape, did not remain the same as well. The space of Galante has changed. The place Galante was transformed and started to be consumed during times of June festivals. The shape remains with some transformations, but the function completely changes following social and economical structure of the times of valorization of touristic services and images and senses valuing the time that has passed.
