Abstract: | The ingestion of Portulaca oleracea was reported by farmers as a cause of poisoning in sheep. To determine the toxicity of P. olaracea 7 experimental and one control sheep, weighting 19-30 kg, were used. The plant was given orally at the dose 80g/kg/body weight. The control sheep ingested grass and concentrated food. One to four hours after ingestion the animals presents bloat, ruminal pH of de 8-9, pollakiuria, aerophagy, involuntary movements of the upper lip, apathy, tachypnea and tachycardia. Five animals recovered, including one treated with methylene blue, and two died. At necropsy the mucosae were cyanotic and the blood was brown. The diphenylamine test in the plant and ruminal content was positive for nitrate/nitrite. In conclusion, P. olaracea causes poisoning by nitrate/nitrite in sheep. |
