Incidência de criptorquidismo em equinos no semi-árido da Paraíba.

Abstract

Cryptorchism is a failure in the descent of one or the testicles for the scrotal place. It is the most common anomaly differentiation of the genital masculine system and it is so frequent in equines, swine, goats, dogs, cats and eventually in bovines, generally just one of the testicles is affected, which could be permanent in the inguinal or abdominal region. In this study were collected data referred to the equine attended in the clinic for big animals of the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), from the Patos city and regions near from it. Animals that presented cryptorchism as diagnosis, between the years 1999 and 2009, aiming to identify a possible relation of the disease with the breed and the age of the committed animals as well as the kind and the antimerism of the affection. Some clinical and surgical aspects were investigated in 13 registers with positive diagnosis. From the year 1999 to 2001, and in 2004, there were no cases. From the year 2005 to 2009 there was observed the most frequency in the studied casuistic, with 10 of the 13 cases detected. The frequency of this affection was high in Quarter Horses, Mangalarga and mixed horses, and all the animals had at least 30 months of age. The unilateral cryptorchism was predominant than the bilateral. The abdominal retention occurred in the most cases, with the prevalence for the left side. The inguinal retention occurred only in two animals, being one in the left side and other in the right one. All the treatments realized were surgical with extirpation of the both testicles, when they were presented, because it probably is a hereditary disturb. It can be concluded that the animals with crytorchism present troubles for the farmers and for the rural proprieties, and the technique used in the treatment is efficient and necessary, besides the restriction of these animals for reproductive aims.
