Avaliação do potencial gentóxico dos extratos de Psidium guineense SW (Araçá Verdadeiro) em células da mucosa oral.

Abstract

The study and manufacture of therapeutic innovations of plant origin include several steps. In the course of preclinical studies, experiments are performed to determine the safety of the use of that compound that has been isolated from the plant in humans, then tests are performed to evaluate the toxicity of the product, as well as whether it has the possibility cause mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. The Psidium guinean Sw, which is popularly called "true arachis", "araçá do campo" and "wild guava" belongs to the family Myrtaceae and has already presented several biological effects published in the literature, however, few toxicological studies are conducted with their extracts. Based on this, the objective of this study was to analyze the genotoxic potential of the extracts of the plant Psidium guineense SW, against cells of the oral cavity. Based on the results, it can be seen that no extract tested showed high micronucleus, binuclation, caryolysis and karyorrexe levels in the oral mucosa cells in comparison to the positive control. Therefore, it is concluded that Psidium guineense SW extracts present a low genotoxic potential.
