Abstract

This research has historically looked at the bases developed by lay religious leaders in the diocesan church of Cajazeiras, Paraiba state – Brazil, during the period 19641989. To carry out this study, we used bibliographical and oral sources, which allowed us to know the political economic social ecclesial historical context, through the approach of the object that has as its subject the lay leaders of the Catholic Church. The interviews enabled us to discover their mission and their militant experiences in the face of the social challenges they faced. The method of work adopted was the Marxist and dialectical critical analysis of written and oral sources in a Marxist perspective, so that the research is in the field of New Political History and Social History that allowed us to understand the object and the subjects beyond what the which they present themselves. The line of liberation theology was also a method used for sociological and ecclesial analysis. To provide answers to questions on the Catholic Church, the power and secular leadership. And fill gaps in historical records about the performance and contribution of these leaders, encouraging, from theoretical knowledge, an effective and conscious participation of laymen and women as "ecclesial and social subjects" in the environment where they are inserted.
