Abstract

The "foal heat" is the first postpartum estrus occurs within the first fifteen days between the fifth (5th) and 15th (fifteenth) day postpartum, being a peculiarity o f horses. For this reason, there is much disagreement about the fertility of this rut. However, because of the advantages that the "foal heat" gives breeders and veterinarians for animals with high genetic apparatus, this research aims to evaluate the efficiency o f the index pregnancy during this heat as well as their fertility and their relationship with the playback natural mating and artificial insemination and also with the age of the animals. In fact, we used mares stud located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, specifically in the cities of Canguaretama, Parnamirim, Lagoa Salgada and Currais Novos, intending to become a source o f reference for professionals and created by the state disability studies on the subject. The research was done through sampling of 116 (one hundred and sixteen) mares, all, with good nutritional value, divided into three groups, the first being with mares age five (05) years, the group 02 of 06 (six) to 12 (dose) years and the last group with mares thirteen (13) to twenty (20) years. Despite not having been detected significant importance on data obtained with the analysis showed that this heat has viability here in the state, reaching 37.50% to 69.23% chance of pregnancy, with an average duration of 5 17 to 5.56 days o f estrus and interval between calving and the onset of estrus 8.27 to 9.04 days. Therefore, it is noted that the results with both natural mating with artificial insemination as were satisfactory with respect to pregnancy rate, proving their fertility during the "foal heat".
