Abstract

Intentional partial odontectomy (IPO), also known as coronectomy is an alternative technique with the purpose of minimizing lesions to noble structures, as well as reducing the risk of mandibular fracture. This study aimed to characterize the knowledge of undergraduate dental students in the city of Patos- PB, on the use of the IPO technique. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, exploratory research with a quantitative approach. The sample is composed of 169 students from the sixth to tenth graduation period. A questionnaire was used which addresses data related to the knowledge of coronectomy. It was verified that 66.9% of the sample was female, with a mean age of 23.1 years. The results indicated that with 33.7%, the 7th period had the largest number of participants. A total of 76.3% are familiar with the OPI technique. It was observed that 94.6% of the students who knew the technique stated that they knew their indications, but of these, 86.9% matched the respective indications for the IPO. In 79.2% of the cases, they reported knowing the contraindications for coronectomy, of which 61.9% answered correctly. Regarding the main complications of the technique, 80.8 %% claimed to know, however, only 33.3% correctly scored. Regarding the students' opinion about the advantages and disadvantages of the technique, 85.7% felt that the advantages overlap the disadvantages. It is concluded that although the majority of the students report knowing the technique and indications of the IPO, only a small group correctly knew its contraindications and complications and although it could present some disadvantages, most of the interviewees agreed that the advantages are greater.
