Confecção de protetor bucal individualizado para atleta: relato de caso.

Abstract

Sports and all types of physical activity, whether at a professional or at a recreational level, offer risks of orofacial trauma in their practice. Mouth guards appear as the best way to protect and prevent injuries resulting from sports activities, and it is extremely important that the dental surgeon guides and encourages the athletes to perform a safe practice. The objective of this work is to report a clinical case of the preparation of an individualized buccal protector, demonstrating the necessary steps to guarantee comfort and not to disrupt functions such as: breathing, speech and swallowing; promoting the athlete's oral health and improving athletic performance. Patient F.G.S.T., 34 years old, male, attended the Clinical School of Dentistry of the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), in the Center for Health and Rural Technology (CSTR), reporting the desire to make a dental evaluation. After anamnesis and clinical examination, good general health and oral hygiene were observed. The patient reported being a practitioner and teacher in different modalities of martial arts, being indicated the preparation of an individualized buccal protector (type III), for the upper arch as a form of treatment. In conclusion, this work aims to contribute to the evolution of Sports Dentistry, from the disclosure of more information about the importance of the use of mouth guards in the prevention of orofacial traumas during sporting practices, highlighting the role of the dental surgeon in their preparation.
