Caracterização do componente curricular: Odontologia para pacientes com necessidades especiais, nos cursos de Odontologia do Estado da Paraíba.

Abstract

Characterization of the curricular component: Dentistry for patients with special needs, in Dentistry courses in the State of Paraíba. The regulation of the specialization in Dentistry for the Handicapped emerged through resolution 25/2002 of the Federal Dentistry Council. According to law 9.394/96, undergraduate courses has a didactic-scientific autonomy to establish their curricular programming. Thus, the discipline of Dentistry for the Handicapped may or not be present in the curricular grade of Dentistry courses. The objective of the research was to characterize the discipline of Dentistry for the Handicapped in courses of the State of Paraíba. This is a cross-sectional quantitative study. A form was produced and information was collected through the official courses website. Of the total 11 courses, it was possible to collect information from 9 upper-level schools. In six of them the discipline was present and the nomenclature varied from one faculty to another. The offer of the course was compulsory in 100% of the courses and in 5 the presentation was theory/ clinical, and in only 1 did not include information. Two courses provided the discipline in the 8th and 9th semester and the average time load of all subjects was 62.2h. In 50% the subjects had connections with others and in 60% they worked independently. It was possible to conclude that, in Paraíba, most of the faculties offer the discipline in them curriculum, but there are still some that need to include the Handicapped discipline in them undergraduate courses in Dentistry.
