Sorriso gengival: cirurgia plástica periodontal associada à toxina botulínica na reabilitação estética.

Abstract

The smile can express a range of experiences, ranging from happiness to sensuality. It is not only a form of communication, but also a way of socialization and attraction. An aesthetic smile is characterized by the harmonious relationship between lips structure and dentogingival contour. When more than 2 mm of gingival tissue are exposed on smile, it’s characterized the modification called gummy smile. This article aimed to report a clinical case of a patient who used to show large gummy excess when smiling, with the hyperfunction of the upper lip as etiology. With aesthetic purpose, the periodontal plastic surgery was associated with application of botulinum toxin type A for gummy smile correction. After the gengivectomy, low level laser therapy was used to enhance comfort and control the pain in the postoperative period. Through clinical and photographic analysis, it was found that the combination of techniques has resulted in a harmonious and more aesthetically pleasant smile, with decrease of gingival exposure from 8mm to 2mm. It was concluded that the accurate diagnosis of the etiology and the correct choice of the techniques used for the correction of gummy smile are crucial for a successful, predictable and satisfactory treatment.
