Para além do cativeiro: a inserção de homens negros e pardos nas forças militares da Parahyba (1966-1817).

Abstract

The present research of master's degree, linked to the research line: Culture, Power and Identities, in the field of History, Culture and Societies, aims to analyze the insertion of black men into the military forces, mainly from the colonial period, on Thirds of Black Men and Pardos in the eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Paraíba. The purpose is not only to investigate the origins of this institution, but mainly to understand how military engagement transformed the black men's life experience, whether enslaved, free or freed. In order to do this, it was necessary to understand the development of the permanent military forces in the Kingdom and how they were adapted to the reality of Portuguese America, passing through a more detailed investigation about the organization and dynamics of the Thirds of Black Men and Pardos in Paraíba and concluding with signs of political insertion occasioned by military engagement, on the occasion of Pernambucan Insurrection of 1817. In the perspective of the slavery historiography influenced by English Social History, especially in the figure of Edward P. Thompson, we see the Thirds as a rich field of investigation of black men's experience and insertion who, even in an extremely hierarchical slave society, acted in a institutionalized military force. In addition to the bibliography related to the theme, we used primary sources from the Waldemar Bispo Duarte Historical Archives (Public Archive of Paraíba State), as well as journals from the Paraiban's Historical and Geographical Institute and consultation with the Historical Documents of the National Library dedicated to 1817
