Imagens do Moderno em Patos - PB: (1934-1958).

Abstract

This dissertation has as main thematic the question of the modernity in the city, and its research object is the town of Patos, situated in the remote interior of Paraíba state, in Brazil, between 1934 and 1958. In such case, on the impossibility of studying the rising of the modem in a small town of that state, that in the era we study its population was more or less between seven and thirteen thousand people, if we have as standard the current characteristics of the big European or Brazilian metropolis, for instance: Paris, London and Rio de Janeiro. Remain to us recover the modem equipments of the period and try to perceive the modifications realized from that point on because they get in the inner of the visible and the sensible. On this perspective, we try to understand how the modernization on the transports, communications and leisure changed the urban cartography of Patos and, by its way, constructed new sociabilities, and then contributed on the rise of sensibilities connected to the imaginary of modem life that had as main centre the civilized metropolis, in Brazil and in the world. Finally, in the seek for answers about the modem in the town of Patos we used various historiographical sources, among them: memory books, oral reports of memories, romances, newspapers and pictures. In the dialogue with this diversity of sources the evidentiary paradigm of Carlo Ginzburg was very important in our research.
