Lights, camera and action: tradução de títulos de filmes da língua inglesa para o português brasileiro.

Abstract

The present study aims at identifying translation strategies as well as translation categories used in translations of titles of films from English into Brazilian Portuguese. The study also intends to analyse if the translated tittles, inserted in the Brazilian context, correspond to possible interpretations of the films, starting with the title in Brazilian Portuguese that is about to be released in the Brazilian market. To achieve the aims, the translation strategies described by Chesterman (1997), the translation categories pointed out by Munday (2001) and the Functional Translation Approach by Nord (1997) will be the basic theories to guide the study. The methodology used was to select twelve titles looking to different genres trying to observe how they carry out the translations under a scientific perspective not just marketing. The results show the predominance of the literal translation (Munday, 2001) and the interlingual category according to Jakobson (1959) used in the translation of the titles from EL into BPL, showing that exist the tentative to keep the translations into Brazilian Portuguese as close as possible to the original language using linguistics signs of each language.
