Efeito abortivo de Aspidosperma pyrifolium (pereiro) para caprinos e ovinos.

Abstract

To determine the abortive effect of Aspidosperma pyrifolium in goats and sheep two experiments were performed. One group with 4 animals, three treated and one control, was used or each species. After the confirmation o pregnancy green leaves of the plant were administered orally at daily doses of 10g/kg body weight to three sheep and three goats between day 90 and day 120 of gestation. One of the three goats that received the plant gave birth to a premature kid at 124 days of gestation. The other two experimental and the control goat delivered normal kids. The three sheep that received the plant and the control sheep gave birth to normal lambs. No significant lesions were observed in the kid that was born premature and in the placentas of sheep and goats. It is concluded that A. pyrifolium had no fetotoxic effect for sheep at the doses used in this experiment. The experiment with goats was inconclusive. New experiments using different doses in different stages of gestation are necessary to demonstrate the toxicity of A. pyriolium for pregnant sheep and in goats.
