attained a great deal of importance among productive activities. Therefore, it has also gained importance with regard to public sector policy in the country. Previously, these policies left much to be desired on a national scale due to the reduction to the establishement of norms of aspects favourable to this activity. In the Northeast, the policies of Megaprojetos and PRODETUR/NE have been historic attempts to diminish social and economic disparities between this region and the more developed regions in the country. The principal objective of the program established by PRODETUR/NE is to stimulate tourism in the Northeast through the implementation of infra-structure. However, this program has been restricted to the coastal areas by PRODETUR/PB, to the detriment of the remainder of the state, which, though it possesses tourist potential which can be developed, has not yet been taken into consideration. Tourism in Paraíba has not yet attained the expected level of development in spite of the involvement of PRODETUR/PB. This could be a result of the fragile state policy with regard to tourist activity. The state should collaborete whith the program especially as it is mainly concerned with the establishment of infra-structure.
