Abstract

Small towns have their peculiarities and play an important role in the regional and local context, undergoing transformation processes inherent to the scale of their influence. These urban changes are driven by a series of interconnected factors, including the acti-ons of public and private agents in shaping the space. With the expansion of the Federal Network, the Federal Institute of Science and Technology of Paraíba (IFPB) began im-plementing new campuses in various municipalities in Paraíba, including the city of Esperança, starting in 2014. The selected location for constructing the Esperança Cam-pus, previously a rural area, has undergone significant transformations. These changes include increased real estate speculation and a higher flow of people in the vicinity, gi-ving the area a typically urban dynamism. The main objective of this study is to analyze and highlight the territorial, urban, and regional implications resulting from the insertion of the IFPB campus in the district of Esperança. To achieve this, we analyzed the pro-cesses of urban transformation in Esperança, specifically focusing on the area where the IFPB campus is situated. To identify the changes that occurred, we considered the peri-od from the conception of the campus insertion in 2009 until the present. Field visits were conducted for direct observation of the phenomenon and data collection related to Esperança’s urban growth, revealing other factors contributing to these transformations. Information was gathered from official data and documents that help clarify the motiva-tions behind the IFPB Esperança campus placement. The study concludes that the inser-tion of the IFPB campus in Esperança significantly impacts urban space, reflecting the considerable influence of public policies in small towns. The observed infrastructural changes, such as the construction of subdivisions and the emergence of new develop-ments, bear witness to this impact.
