Abstract

This dissertation aims to understand the devotion to the patron saint festival in the city of São Sebastião de Lagoa de Roça-PB between the years 2005-2024. The temporal scope begins with the creation of the parish in 2005 and extends to the most recent celebrations, analyzing the continuities and modifications in the festival before, during, and after the pandemic period experienced with the COVID-19 virus. For this study, we used oral sources through interviews, bringing memories, stories, and feelings from people who have lived and continue to live the festival. The general objective of the research is to discuss the festival of the patron saint São Sebastião after the creation of the parish, including customs, changes, continuities, and adaptations built over time. The research focuses on the field of Cultural History, analyzing cultural representations through the oldest and most traditional festival in the city, which has been constructing identities, memories, and a sense of belonging for over a century. In addition to the interviews, we rely on personal and private photographs, epidemiological bulletins, scientific articles, and dialogues with authors such as Pasavento (2003), Chartier (2002), Halbwachs (1990), and others who contribute to our understanding of cultural construction through festive representation.
