A história da medicina de Sousa: A Maternidade Lídia Meira - 1949 a 2002.

Abstract

With this work, we intend to study the history of Sousa-PB medicine, taking as reference the LídiaMeira Maternity, from its emergence to its deactivation. For that, I take into account the social, political and economic aspect of said municipality, considering every society in which it was inserted; And understood as the great region of Sousa, going from its headquarters and the rural population and neighboring districts and municipalities, which were benefited by the Maternity. This means that the population of the city of Sousa witnessed for fifty-three years medicine in Sousa-PB through the LídiaMeira Maternity as an instrument of medical-hospital assistance, especially to the most needy people who received free medical care and services. Maternity was pioneered as a medical-hospital institution in Sousa, founded and opened in 1949 and deactivated in 2002. It had an agreement with the National Institute of Social Security (INPS) and the National Institute of Medical Assistance of Social Security (INAMPS), And was a philanthropic entity maintained by the Society for Protection of Motherhood and Children of Sousa. It had its source of income in the entities with which it was agreed, and fully applied its incomes in the maintenance of institutional, social and philanthropic objectives. In the year of 1988, he had to have an agreement with SUS (Unified Health System). From this perspective, the information gathered on the issues raised, about what would have led the LídiaMeira Maternity to success as a hospital establishment and its closure, from the analysis of the reasons for its emergence and deactivation. The purpose of this study is to examine relevant aspects of the social, economic and political context of the city of Sousa-PB, as well as the social, political and cultural context of Paraíba and Brazil, where the public health of the municipality, from the country. In this sense, the research was based on the perspective of the field of social history, seeking to understand what would have happened from the political, economic and social point of view that led to the emergence and deactivation of said Maternity. A thorough investigation of the existing official documentation was carried out, as well as an investigation of the bibliography related to the theme, as well as oral history through interviews with people who worked and were at Maternity's disposal; Such as doctors Nicodemos de Paiva Gadelha, known as Dr. Cozinho, the physician AntônioQueiroga Gadelha, who was director of the surgical center, but known as Dr. ToinhoQueiroga, and Mrs. Francilda Batista Fernandes, who also worked until the moment of retire.
