Tradução do humor: estratégias tradutórias na legendagem da série ”FRIENDS” .

Abstract

In the Audiovisual Translation area, Subtitling allows different types of audience to disrupt the limits related to foreign filmographic industries. This work intends to analyze strategies utilized to translante the subtitles of the sitcom FRIENDS. The corpus utilized for analysis, which is composed by the first twelve episodes of the second season of the sitcom FRIENDS, was divided between two types of humour: Irony and Wordplay (DYNEL, 2011). Such division allows this work to focus on the specificities contained in each stretch with different types of comedy. For such analysis, the chosen subtitles of translation were submitted to the three possibilities of translation pointed by van de Broeck (1981, apud KOGLIN, 2008), which are: Strictu Sensu Translation, Substitution and Paraphrase. As a consequence of this study, it was possible to verifiy that the process which the translations were submitted does not have as its main focus the comprehension of the spectator who does not predisposes the necessary knowledge of the of the language utilized to develop the show. One of the main issues found was the lack of pattern within the translation of the analyzed jokes, displaying that the translation process was not properly executed. Thus, there are plenty moments when the information displayed not only do not supply the necessary information, but are capable of befuddling its audience.
