Abstract

This work has as main objective to analyze the translation of dialects into Portuguese in the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, published in 1884. Written by Mark Twain (1835-1910) history takes us to the pre-Civil War scenario in the South of U.S. The translation was done by translator Rosaura Einchenberg, in 2011, and published by the publisher L & PM Pocket. In this version, we see the dialects spoken by the inhabitants of the Pike County region in the state of Missouri, being recreated in a way that sounds familiar to the Brazilian public. Here we analyze how the dialects of the characters Huck and Jim were translated according to the cultural factors presented in the source text for the target text. Thus, it was possible to discuss how the translator can find a way to translate dialects and thus enrich the text of arrival. For this analysis we used as a theoretical contribution Toury (1995), which brings the perspective of Descriptive Translation Studies, related mainly to the culture of the target text and to Klinberg (1986), which shows us alternatives for the translation of dialects, among others. Therefore, the analysis was performed using a parallel corpus, when the source and target texts will be side by side so that we can perceive the similarities and differences between them.
