Abstract

In this study, an attempt is made to investigate some aspects of the vertical structure of the atmosphere over the southern tropical Atlantic Ocean. For this purpose radiossonde data (temperature of air, geo-potential height, direction and velocity of the wind ), reanalyzed fields of the NCEP and pictures of the Meteosat- 5 Satellite in the infra-red channel provided by the CPTEC/INPE. Were used the radiossonde data had been collected on board of the NOc Antares during the period starting from March 13 to April 2 of 1997. The potential temperature profiles show a conditionally unstable atmosphere, which is associated with the presence of trade winds close to the surface. The behavior of 9 and 0e are linked to the intensity and direction of the wind in the first 300m above of the surface.The temperature inversion seen in the profiles of equivalente potencial temperature in the lower levels is related to the intensity of the Subtropical Atlantic High. The values observed in the direction and intensity of the winds seen in the radiossonde are in coherence with the reanalyzed fields of the NCEP. The fields of vorticity, divergence and vertical movements through the analyses, explain the amount of existing cloudiness in the area under study.
