Abstract:
This work is concerned with the design of an optimal operation for a system of five
reservoirs, which are the Poco Fundo, Tabocas, Jatauba, Oitis and Machado, located at the
upper part of the Capibaribe river basin in the semiarid region of Pernambuco state. Due to
the water shortage, generally during nine months of the year, they are very important for the
social and economic development of that region. The solution presented herein was obtained
with the CISDERGO (Cropping and Irrigation System Design with Optimal Reservoir and
Groundwater Operation), which is based on linear programming, and ORNAP (Optimal
Reservoir Network Analysis Program), which is based on nonlinear programming, softwares
regarding the maximization of the net profit attained from the selection of reservoirs water
releases, choice of crops and their areas at five potential irrigated croplands and fishing
activities at each reservoir. All the physical, agronomic and operational constraints, including
the sustainability of the reservoir, were taken into account. The analysis was made based on
climate scenarios of a twelve months period, which represents rainy, dry and average years, as
well as reservoirs' initial conditions, cities water demand and regional cropping patterns.
