In this thesis the performance of UASB (up flow anaerobic sludge blanket) was
evaluated for the treatment of vinasse after inoculation with different types of sludge.
Sludge from a a reactor treating brewery was used combined with sludge from
anaerobic sewage treatment. Four UASB reactors (R1, R2, R3 e R4) were operated
during two phases of experimental work (I e II) with different operational conditions. In
phase I industrial sludge was used as inoculum and the reactors were operated with
upflow velocities in the range of of 0,4 to 2 m/h for a period of 101 days. At the end of
the operating period the attained volumetric organic load was in the range of 12 to 18
kg/m3/dia. In phase II, the four reactors were reinoculated with mixtures sanitary sludge
with different proportions of industrial sludge. Reactor R4, inoculated with only sanitary
sludge was the reference reactor. During this phase the four reactors were operated
with the same upflow velocity. The reactors were operated for 98 days, when a specific
volumetric load in the range of 12 kg/m3/dia was attained. At the end of the two phases
the sludge in the reactors were adapted to vinasse and had a specific methanogenic
activity (SMA) of 0,2 a 0,8 gDQO.gSV"1.dia"1, with sedimentation properties ranging
from good to excellent. Toxicity tests showed that the anaerobic sludge was sensitive to
the biocides used at alcohol distilleries.
