Résumé:
The city in its own conception is endowed with materiality and subjectivity. According to
Calvino (2003), when we deal with delimited space in the time, itself, we just assimilate the
symbols. And, however much a history of the present time is, its past that crystallizes and
turns into insignia. The neighborhood that composed the city are fragmented and each city
space retaining in its practices, own characteristics that, moving away of the urban centers, are
evidenced. In this sense, it goes through the content of this production. Results with this, a
study of the neighborhood of Estação in the city of Sousa, located in Sertão of the Paraíba,
and from the material culture point of view, come into in their dependences: daily and life,
though the lenses of work with rail station of the Sousa city, between the years from 1960 to
2000. Are questions that lead us, first of all, to understand the insert of the train in the city of
Sousa as an icon of progress and modernization. Paraphrasing Benjamin (2007), which brings
to man his mania of grandeur, but in the same time is not finite, disappearing and creating
new perspectives. In virtue of this work with a modern mechanism, we weave historical
narratives with the retired train line master José Leoncio and the street peddler Martins, as
way as to problematize their memories in virtue of daily and work around the neighborhood
of Estação. The analysis sources are anchored in orality, with the retired railroad labourers
and the street peddler Martins Sarmento, with the additive of the reports of province of north
of the Parayba, in the years of 1860 and 1923 and in the minutes of the Sousa Railroad
Association. With the intent to problematize the plots that surround this emblematic scope.
