Abstract:
This work aims to discuss the coronelismo as a political practice result of a specific
historical moment and whose characteristics that can be compared and resemble those of
contemporary political leaders. In these terms, we will cover a particular manifestation of
Brazilian politics, which occurred in Lavras da Mangabeira, Ceara, between the late
nineteenth and early twentieth century. In this region, through inheritance of political
power, Fideralina Augusto Lima became a colonel of the interior, leaving memories about
her life and her actions. We will concentrate on the analysis of these memories through
interviews conducted by the methodology of oral history, highlighting the uniqueness of
coronelismo she undertook. We discussed the concept of coronelismo through books like:
Coronelismo, enxada e voto, by Leal (2012); Família e coronelismo no Brasil: uma
história de poder, by Rêgo (2008); e O coronelismo e a imagem do coronel: de símbolo a
simulacro do poder local, by Fortunato (2000), which discusses the historical context that
led to the development of the actions of local chiefs, even "away" from the established
power.
