Given the increasing number of elderly people with AIDS, it is necessary to know if the teams of the Family Health Strategy (FHS) are developing practices to prevent Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in the elderly population and what are the difficulties and facilities to perform the actions. The main objective of this study was to investigate the health practices developed by FHS teams in the prevention of STI / AIDS in the elderly. The study was a descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach. The research locus were the Basic Health Units (BHU) in São José de Piranhas - Paraíba. The study population were 20 professionals who make up the FHS teams that city, including doctors, nurses, nursing technicians and Community Health Worker (CHW). The research was realized in the period from November 2013 to April 2014. The instrument for data collection was a semi-structured interview, which was answered after signature the consent form. The data were organized and categorized based on the technique of content analysis and analyzed according to the literature relevant to the topic. The research was conducted in compliance with all the ethical rules contained in Resolution Nº 466 of December 12, 2012, of the National Health Council. The results show that the participants were aged between 20 and 65 years, most were married, skin color white and those who collaborated with more research were the CHW, active mainly in the urban area in a time frame of two to 25 years. Categories showed that few professionals developed actions to prevent STIs / AIDS directed for the elderly, nobody performed the active search for elderly to do the HIV test, the teams received few materials for carrying out the actions and professionals have reported many difficulties, such as lack of training and no remind the elderly to preventive practices. It is considered that the implementation of existing public policies and actions more specific and effective is necessary for the prevention of STI / AIDS in the elderly and the professionals need to see the elderly as sexually active to be able to insert it into public policies actions preventive actions.
