Résumé:
This study aimed to discuss the visibility and representation of Africa through the textbooks
of Geography of Elementary School from the point of view of racial themes after the
implementation of Law 10.639/2003, which made it compulsory to teach African and Afro-
Brazilian history and culture, with the purpose of approaching African content in the
textbooks of Geography in the construction of African cultural knowledge. Law 10.639/2003
marks a major achievement in the sense of resistance and struggle for reparation, rights, and
respect for the history and cultural diversity of Brazil’s black population, being the main
educational legislation in order to combat racism. To adjust to the new reality, the textbooks
had to exclude any kind of incitement to racism, so the Plano Nacional do Livro Didático
(PNLD) is responsible for supervising these educational books. We analized the changes
about the African content in textbook for the 8th grade of Elementary School, published in
2015. Through this analyzes, it was verified that the Geography textbook presents
contradictions to the Law 10.639/2003, and the PNDL review leaves gaps on the fight against
racism.
