Cardiac catheterization is a hemodynamic procedure in which analog images of cardiac
chambers and vessels, recorded in 35 mm films, are produced. Analysis of the left
ventricle images is quite important to evaluate its function. This work proposes a
methodology to isolate the left ventricle and to calculate parameters that refer to its
function. Analog images were digitized and stored using the TIFF file format. A region
segmentation technique was applied to isolate the left ventricle. Prior to segmentation, a
pre-processing step was accomplished, in order to eliminate noise and to make an image
gray level uniformization. Left ventricle volume, mass and ejection fraction were
calculated using the segmented images and validation was performed using reference
values.
