Resumo:
The construction sector is constantly developing in order to obtain construction and structural materials and methods that best adapt to the needs of each region and work profile, striving for more efficient, economical and sustainable means. Structural masonry has evolved considerably in recent decades, becoming one of the most sustainable building systems due to the rationalization that leads to the reduction of waste generated, constituting one of the most common building systems currently due to the full capacity to meet the demand of the sector, by more efficient and environmentally viable means. Thus, the objective of this work was to design a five-storey residential building in structural masonry of concrete blocks made in accordance with ABNT NBR 15961-1: 2011 and analyze its arch. The slabs were pre-dimensioned according to ABNT NBR 6118: 2014 and the lifting of vertical loads according to ABNT NBR 6120: 2019. The arc effect was calculated by the Riddington and Smith (1978) equation, due to its simplicity and the fact that it presents results that are close to reality. The occurrence of the arc effect was observed with an increase of tensions in the walls of the building and the essential parameters responsible for such occurrence. It is evident the increase of stresses close to the supports and the need to consider the interaction wall and beam in the design of structural masonry buildings supported on beams, being indispensable to avoid the appearance of pathologies and to meet the expected performance standards.
