With this in mind, heath care practitioners’ knowledge about how to measure pain as well as the treatment to control it are of major importance to a holistic treatment aiming both the patient and their needs. The goal of this research was to characterize scientific online publication in cancer pain and palliative care between 2002 and 2012. It’s an integrative literature review of Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde content in SciELO and LILACS databases, using “dor oncológica” and “cuidados paliativos” as search keywords. The inclusion criteria used to select publications were: access-free full articles about cancer pain, written in portuguese and published between 2002 and 2012. As a result, incomplete articles, published in any other language with restricted access composed the exclusion criteria. Thematic content analysis methods were used for analysing collected publications. This research analysed a sample of 25 full articles, written in portuguese and available at one of the databases above. Results show that the majority of articles (20%) were published in 2011 as well as the most frequent publication kind (40%) were literature review. The distribution of authors’ formation is equal in medicine and nursing (36% each). Also from the analysis, the selected articles can be divided in three categories: “Evaluation of pain cancer", "biologic interventions in the treatment of cancer pain" and “ psychotherapeutic interventions in the treatment of cancer pain”. The thematic is significantly important to the health care professionals. Once knowing the value of understanding finiteness of life and its impact on the patient, it is necessary to keep carrying on such kind of research and to make means of measure and treat cancer pain available to professionals, in order to minimize cancer pain and increase the quality of patients’ life.
