This work describes the constructive forms of the various parts of a resistive potential divider and the criteria adopted for the determination of its parameters. Some measurement problems and impulse voltage interference are addressed as well as the fundamentals of unit step response. We propose a new technique for modeling the parasitic capacitance of a divider based on the calculation of the electrostatic field along the resistive column. This technique was applied and the calculated unit step responses coincided with the values measured on a prototype built in the Laboratory. It was recommended for further studies to optimize the shape and location of the shielding electrodes in order to obtain an optimal step response.
