Abstract:
Palliative care is recognized as an approach that improves the quality of life of people and their families, when the presence of terminal illnesses, and are characterized by a set of professional acts that are intended to control the symptoms of the body, mind, spirit and social distress the man in his finitude. Therefore, it is also necessary to prepare and investment to educate health professionals that patients suffering from ailments that have no cure need a proper care and returned to give them dignity and relief to their suffering in this life stage. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to understand the knowledge of nursing students about palliative care. This is an exploratory, descriptive qualitative character performed with nursing students at the Federal University of Campina Grande campus Cuité ( UFCG -CES ). The research sample consisted of 20 students of nursing who were attending the 9th and 10th periods. We used the following criteria for the selection of participants in the study: they were attending the last year of the Bachelor of Nursing and who agreed to participate in research that signed the Informed Consent Form and Clarification. The criteria used complied with Resolution 466/2012 of the National Health Council that guides research involving humans. He also asked permission to record the interviews. The survey was conducted after approval by the Ethics and Research Coordinator and approval of the Academic Unit of Health of the Centre. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews during the month of July 2013 were analyzed according to the literature following the conceptual bases of the Collective Subject Discourse ( CSD). The data allowed to form core ideas in relation to the knowledge that academic research participants had. In this perspective, the central ideas were: "Palliative care improves the quality of life of the patient in the process of illness and terminal illness through a holistic care and ethics"; "Preparation academic and personal", "pain relief, symptoms and therapies alternative to the well -being", "professional qualifications, physical structure, teamwork, humanization. "Before the DSC can be observed that nursing students even with the absence of a subject or subjects that ressaltassem on the theme "palliative care", failed to respond to the questions in the survey. Towards the end of this study, it can be observed that even without an ideal support in academia related to Palliative Care, participating students have a somewhat empirical knowledge on the subject. Therefore it is necessary to reflect on the meaning of life and the care and, thus, questioning the process of teaching and learning. Redesigning the Educational Project Course, as well as defragment content and disciplines are the first steps to changing paradigms in relation to palliative care.
