Abstract:
Iron deficiency anemia is the most prevalent nutritional deficiency in the world, despite being a cosmopolitan disease is associated with socioeconomic factors, being more prevalent in poorer regions and having a population less clear. Its prevalence is much discussed in Brazil, to be high, especially in high-risk patients, such as children and pregnant women, the latter the object of study. This study aimed to identify the best way to diagnose iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy, establishing the parameters most commonly used and most trusted for accurate diagnosis and conclusive, and to profile epidemiological prevalence in Brazil. The study showed that for an accurate diagnosis is necessary tests Haemoglobin, RBC indices (MCV and MCH) and serum ferritin. And realized that evidence of iron deficiency, despite being the most prevalent nutritional deficiency and disseminated on the planet, would be far from being responsible for most cases of anemia in pregnancy. And therefore would not be appropriate to use as the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency anemia hint of this as an estimator of iron deficiency in this phase of the life cycle.
