Abstract:
The present work had the objective to describe and assess, with a global and quantitative approach, inside of the context of the research program to assess irrigation performance in Brazil (project RPIP-Brazil), the situation of the District of Irrigation Senator Nilo Coelho, through the identification of some indicators for verification of the performance of irrigation schemes and consequent rationalization of the use of natural resources and sustainability of the mentioned systems. Based on existing data records and interviews made
with the staff members of the Irrigation District and government organizations, a choice was made of the indicators that were viable to be evaluated. Various indicators, related to irrigated area, water requirements, water supply, energy, water tariff and the value of production, were quantified and analized, showing a profile of the irrigation scheme performance. It should be mentioned that the methodological proposal presented in this study is not yet definitive,
serving as a reference for future studies within this subject, aiming at the definition of a basic set of indicators that would make it possible to compare different irrigation schemes by applying a method of simple calculation that is able to provide a global view of the scheme
activities. The indicators utilized presented promissing results along the years of monitoring, and showed an inter-dependent relationship among them.
