Jaundice is a clinical condition very common in newborns, and characterized by yellowing of the skin and other organs, including the eyes. Can be attributed to many causes, the most original physiological and pathological when the neonate is subjected to phototherapy. The communication process of the nursing staff with the mother whose son is in phototherapy is critical to the safety and efficacy of treatment. The study aimed to: general - to understand how does the process of communication between the nursing staff and mothers of newborn phototherapy in Rooming in order to verify the safety of the newborn and the effectiveness of treatment. Specific - Identify what guidance on precautions to take to the newborn phototherapy are held by nursing staff in mothers rooming; analyze the mothers knowledge about the treatment and care of the newborn phototherapy, and identify the main difficulties faced by mothers about the care needed for the safety of the newborn and efficacy of phototherapy. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, performed at the Institute of Health Elpidio de Almeida, located in the city of Campina Grande - PB. Data were collected between July and August 2013, through a script semistructured interviews with ten mothers of newborns who were in the Rooming phototherapy. In analyzing the data we used the technique of content analysis, thematic or categorical modality. The cluster of subthemes determined six thematic categories: 1 - Guidelines of the nursing staff on care of the newborn phototherapy performed properly; 2 - Guidelines of the nursing staff on care of the newborn phototherapy performed inadequately; 3 - Guidelines of the nursing staff on care of the newborn phototherapy have not been performed; 4 - adequate knowledge of the mothers on the treatment and care of the newborn phototherapy; 5 - insufficient knowledge of mothers on the treatment and care of the newborn phototherapy; 6 - Difficulties faced by mothers about the care needed for the safety of the newborn and the efficacy of phototherapy. Mothers demonstrated a lack of information regarding the care of the newborn phototherapy, which may compromise the safety and treatment of the baby. The nursing staff has a responsibility to inform them of the steps to be performed, as well as support them and encourage them to
be participating in this. Thus it is necessary that communication in nursing is used as a tool for child health care.
