In this work a study was developed for the operation of a five reservoir system, which are named of Bruscas, Cachoeira dos Alves, Saco de Nova Olinda, Canoas and Queimadas, and five irrigated perimeters, which are named of Bruscas (500 ha), Gravata (934 ha), Pianco II, Pianco III and Pianco B rotas (2.285ha), being all of them located in the
the Pianco river basin within the semiarid region of Paraiba state. The objective of this work went to maximize the net profit attained from the irrigated agriculture and extensive fish farming for a one year four climatic settings (Medium, Normal, Dry and Rainy), giving priority to the water urban supply. For the analysis of the behavior of the five
reservoirs water system and the achievement of the optimal solution, a monthly nonlinear programming optimization model, which was developed by Curi and Curi (2001), was used. Two hypothetical crops were used in order to explore the reservoirs irrigation water use potential and to avoid that only the most profitable culture would have been allocated area by the software. The results obtained showed that the water system has conditions to attend the supply human water demands as well as the demands for irrigation, depending on the climatic situation. The attained number of jobs and net profit for fish fanning activity for the optimal solution was also analyzed. The used model showed to be useful as a decision support system, mainly when applied to a semiarid region, which suffers from spatial and temporal water resources and needs analyses that make better use of the local
water.
