According to the World Health Organization (WHO), stress is considered one of the evils of postmodern civilization and has been defined as causing and aggravating various ills. Stress is able to modify the organism, causing tensions and distortions from events that require human quick decisions to solve problems or crises. This evil is significantly affecting all ages and grows remarkably among young people, this fact is explained by the transition they are going through, some find it difficult to adapt, especially students, given the numerous obstacles that tend to face, from the choice of the future , the profession until his new reality, when inserted in the university, the true "locus" of adolescent psychosocial development. In this perspective, the present study aimed to characterize the stress among nursing students; This is a study of quantitative approach, taken a comparative, exploratory cross-sectional, conducted in educational institution Federal University of Campina Grande, campus Cuité - Paraíba. The sample was 40% of students enrolled in the first period and 53% enrolled in the penultimate period. Data collection was performed by an Evaluation of Stress in Nursing Students of the authors Polak and Costa, as well as a semi-structured interview. From the analysis, it was up 8 graphs extracted: Stress related to practical activities, communication and interpersonal skills, difficulty in socializing / recreation, the difficulty of accessibility to professional future, the theoretical activities related to the course, the signs and symptoms of stress and experiencing stress. Thus, the study showed that the categories where the students of the first period had a higher percentage were related to communication and interpersonal skills, difficulty in socializing and leisure activities and social theoretical course. While the ninth exhibited increases in areas relating to the practical course and future career. With regard to accessibility both groups had low stress level. Thus, it is expected that this study will contribute significantly to a better understanding of stress by the academic community, including especially the teachers and administrators of the university so that they can invest in strategies of care and attention to the student clientele.
