Résumé:
In the universe of workers’ healthcare are involved domestic workers, freelancers, agricultural
workers, self-employed workers, public service employees, cooperative workers, employers,
owners of micro and small production units, apprentices, trainees and professionals out of the
labor market due to illness, disability or unemployment. In the civil construction business,
workers are exposed to many occupational hazards, mainly because most of them are inserted
to the informal market. The objective of this study was investigate the cause of accidents in
the civil construction business of the city of Picuí-PB, Brazil, considering socio-demographic
factors, risk conditions for labor accidents and use of protective measures. This is an
exploratory study with quantitative approach, developed with 16 workers in the informal
construction business. Ethical aspects of research involving humans were considered. The
results revealed a predominance of young workers, brown-skinned, working as bricklayers,
married with few children and low education level. Most of them chose this kind of work by
family tradition or by own will and their monthly income are greater than a minimum salary.
The risks of occupational accidents most often mentioned were falls, cuts and electric shocks.
As for protective measures, 8 (50%) of participants reported use of IPE and 1 (6%) reported
using CPE. The IPEs were more used boots and gloves, and CPEs corresponded to tape, cone
signs and emergency lighting. Half of the eight workers (5%) justified the demise of IPE
because they felt uncomfortable, don’t like it or consider it dispensable for their everyday
work routine. The weaknesses inherent in the use of protective equipment are revealed as
motivating conditions for the occurrence of workplace accidents in the construction business
of the city of Picuí. The results of this study did not finalize the discussions about the risks of
accidents at work for this group of workers, but it demonstrates important aspects of Health
Care of Workers in Brazil.
