Résumé:
The traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a lesion caused by impact to the head, compromising its internal or external structures. In this context, the objective of this study is to present the epidemiological profile and the characterization of gravity of traumatisms cranioencephalic in patients attended in a hospital from Seridó paraibano. This is a retrospective and observational study, with indirect observation technique, through records collected by means of secondary data, collected in the period from January to February 2012, in a public hospital from Seridó paraibano, which serves patients with polytraumatism from the region. The sample consisted of 206 medical records of patients diagnosed with TBI treated at the referred hospital, between the period from January to December 2010. Data collected were grouped and analyzed quantitatively in absolute and percentage values, through the EXCEL program which were organized in graphs and discussed in the light of pertinent literature. In relation to the distribution by gender of victims, 60,2% were male and 39,8% were female, being the age group between zero and ten years old the most affected (36,9%). Falls were highlighted as the most frequent causes corresponding to 32% of cases and the conservative treatment was the most utilized (79,1%). Regarding the severity of TBI, the results showed that there was underreporting in the medical records, almost entirely (84%), followed by mild TBI with 15,5% and severe TBI with 0,5%. It is concluded, therefore, that educational programs directed to school extending to community are needed, in order to alert about the risks of accidents and stimulate safe behaviors by the population.
