Resumo:
Procalcitonin is a pro-hormone synthesized in various tissues in patients and only
produced in the thyroid Procalcitonin has a physiological function. The treatment can
be accomplished through blood tests in serum to analyze the procalcitonin levels, or
through biomarker procalcitonin and research algorithms to antibiotic treatment. This
study aims to analyze the importance of measuring serum procalcitonin as
examination monitoring of the septic patient. The research method chosen was the
integrative review, in which we used the procalcitonin descriptors, measurement,
examination, monitoring of the septic patient and review, for scientific foundation and
construction work. The consultation was held in the databases: Brazilian Association
of Intensive Medicine, Brazilian Journal of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine,
Federal University of Bahia, Brazilian Journal of Medicine and at the website of
Archinternmed between the years 2004 to 2012. The selection resulted in seven
articles that met the inclusion criteria of the study, being initiated reading and
analysis of scientific production. After analyzing the articles notes were elected
relevant to the subject matter and grouped with a view to facilitating comparison of
the therapeutic modalities: therapeutic success, costs, recurrence rate, procalcitonin
and treatment after PCT. The analysis showed similar results in the treatment of
patients with severe bacterial infection and sepsis, except for the cost comparison
that not all articles studied had this information that some would be important for this
analysis therefore becomes necessary studies aimed at reality , which would make
the scientific evidence more applicable to clinical practice.
