Geography, the science that studies the relationship between man and environment, is present as a curricular component of basic education. Given this, it is worth highlighting the teaching of geography as a training instrument for the exercise of citizenship. And during the trajectory through elementary school students will understand the interrelationship between physical and human phenomena in the transformation of geographical space. Thus, constructing conceptions about the place and the world and especially the exercise of citizenship. This paper aims to discuss how the teaching of geography present in the school contributes to the formation for the exercise of citizenship, using as input the speeches of the students of the 9th grade of elementary school, as well as the perceptions about fundamental themes for the delineation of a conscience. social and spatial. Considering that the school has as its fundamental prerogative a formation focused on scientific knowledge related to world knowledge, and that the teaching of geography in discussing social, political and environmental themes is preparing students to (re) know the phenomena that directly or indirectly modify geographic space. Citizenship was being built and incorporated over time, becoming an indispensable attribute to the citizen. In this context, the school was highlighted as a space for education, in addition to training for citizenship. With this, we seek to reflect how the school space contributes to forming beyond the scientific knowledge, also what are the perceptions about citizenship, as in front of the classroom and geography classes students perceive the transformations of space and place. The general objective of this research is to understand the contribution of geography teaching to the construction of citizen consciousness. The specific objectives are designed to: Identify in the Geography evidenced in the classroom assumptions that signal the formation of citizenship; Analyze how it is done inside the classroom and through the teacher's practice improvements in the students' behavior in relation to the positioning before social and daily problems inside and outside the school and; Discuss about being a citizen in space / geographical environment. To achieve the proposed objectives, the methodology used started from discussions about the concept of citizenship, geographic space, geography teaching and school space. As an instrument we used the questionnaire in order to evaluate in the students' speech the perception about citizenship and relevant themes in the national scenario. As for the results, it is concluded that the teaching of geography provides fundamental discussions to the exercise of citizenship, forming an awareness focused on the critical positioning to socio-spatial problems, thus evidencing citizens concerned with local inequalities.
