Knowledge should represent the main competitive advantage of organizations. The ability to manage knowledge enabling its capture, distribution and sharing will be a key ingredient for the success of companies. The implementation of knowledge management involves several factors such as processes, cultural aspects, organizational structure, support infrastructure and the scope of knowledge. This diversity of factors presents challenges for the implementation of knowledge management and requires a comprehensive approach to implementation initiatives. The development of this work highlights the importance of knowledge management for software companies. From the intersection of information in the domains of knowledge management, software engineering and the analysis of the profile of Brazilian software companies in the quality area, a framework and a set of guidelines for the implementation of a knowledge management model in software companies are proposed. Considering the profile of the companies studied, a progressive implementation approach is suggested, allowing conscious and more effective knowledge management practices to be gradually applied. The present work also presents a proposal for integrating knowledge management into the R-Cycle mold of the software life cycle.
