Resumen:
This paper discusses the importance of playing in early childhood education and how it can contribute to children's development. Therefore, a brief contextualization of childhood and early childhood education is made as to the first stage of basic education, as well as toys and games in the childhood environment. Playing is necessary for the child's life, as it enables social, cognitive, intellectual and motor development, as well as enhancing skills that help in the construction of their knowledge. In this sense, games and toys are very present in the routine of children, making the activities that use this method increasingly present in classes. The research aimed to observe a preschool class and analyze from a semi-structured interview how toys and games are present in a nursery school in São José de Piranhas - PB. The research is qualitative and took place with the observation of classes in a nursery school during 6 (six) meetings, as well as an interview with open questions to a preschool teacher.
