Currently, several studies have been developed with the aim of using nanotechnology in
flexible pavements. One of the main compounds studied is the nanoclay. Its incorporation into
the asphalt binder supplies improvement in physical and Theological properties and
mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures on the deformation, the breaking by fatigue,
temperature and the breakdown by the action of water. This paper presents a physical analysis
of asphalt binders and mechanical behavior of asphalt mixtures using the following additives:
OMMT (Organic Modified Montmorillonite) and MMT (pure Montmorillonite clay). Tests of
Brookfields viscosity, Softening Point and Penetration, core in the characterization of binders,
which allowed analyzing and comparing the behavior of the pure ligand with modified ligands
with the additives mentioned above were made. In relation to the mixtures, analyzes were
made about the effects of modifiers by means of mechanical tests such as Tensile Strength
Indirect Diametral Compression, Resilience Module and Induced Moisture for Damage
Testing, with all samples submitted to the process of kneading compaction. The main results
indicated that the addition of the two modifiers in the oil asphalt cement increases the
softening point and viscosity, and reduces penetration. In the mechanical characteristics of the
tested mixtures, the results indicated that the OMMT and MMT clay improved the values of
Resilience Modules and Tensile Strength when compared to asphalt binder without modifier.
Furthermore, the effect of the modified binder with OMMT showed better results in respect to
moisture damage induced.
