A renovação carismática e a relação entre a igreja católica e os movimentos sociais: o caso da diocese de Guarabira-PB.

Abstract

In this Dissertation we discuss the influences of the emergency of the Catholic Charismatic Renovation on the relationship between the Catholic Church and Social Movements at the rural world, from a theoretical perspective inspired basically in contributions of Weber's sociology of religion and his concept of Social Action. The methodology adopted was a case study in the Diocese of Guarabira, Paralba (Brazil), which used to be a reference of the social and political engagement of the Catholic Church with rural social movements, through the Ecclesial Communities of Base there established. We carried out semi-structured interviews with catholic priests and other catholic religious leaders, whose life trajectories was reconstructed in reference to their perception on the relationship between the Catholic Church and social movements linked to rural issues in that area. The central question was the historical evolution of the relationship between the Catholic Church and social fights carried out into the Parish of Guarabira. Among the main outcomes of our research we point out the following: (1)The emergence of the Catholic Charismatic Renovation at the Diocese analyzed corresponded to the decreasing of the Ecclesiastic Basis Communities as well activities related to them; (2) into the Diocese of Guarabira occurred what has been observed in the Brazilian Catholic Field: a confrontation between an orientation linked to the values system inspired in the Liberation Theology and the orientation based on the Catholic Charismatic Renovation, with an evident advantage of this one; (3) This advantage can be also understood as a result of changes in the inclusive society, which indicate a general decreasing of the individual's involvement in what consisted the central project of the Catholic Church Progressive Model: the collective engagement in order to solve social problems.
