This search has the aim to evaluate the way of sustainability of family farming culture using the MESMIS (Framework for Evaluating Natural Resource Management Systems Incorporating Sustainability Indicators) method like an instrument for internal management of agricultural production in two communities in the city of Barra de São Miguel-PB. The research methodology used was quantitative and qualitative in nature, since it was based on the interpretation of the process and numerical data related to family agriculture and analysis of the MESMIS method, considering the aspects that this method works. The main difficulty when discussing the sustainability of family farming is to holistically address natural resources. Hence the need to create a measuring instrument that addresses these features and is capable of translating data into an interpretable result. There are validated tools like MESMIS. The results presented using this methodology are indicators of sustainability of family farming culture and the contribution of this project will be the availability of a range of accurate information that can support public politcs that will contribute to the sustainable development of the region and other places, entities and responsible bodies interested in this issue for decision makers to assist in the development of strategies and politics.
